The Skincare Ingredients Science Actually Supports
Cut through the noise: five evidence-based ingredients worth a place in your routine.

New launches promise transformation every week. Yet dermatological research keeps returning to the same short list of proven ingredients. Build your skincare routine around these, and you can safely ignore most of the noise.
1. Broad-spectrum sunscreen
UV exposure drives most visible skin aging—dark spots, fine lines, and lost firmness. Daily SPF 30 or higher is the most powerful anti-aging step there is, and it protects every other investment you make in your skin.
2. Retinoids
Vitamin A derivatives speed cell turnover, boost collagen, and refine texture. Start with two or three evenings a week and build slowly. If your skin is sensitive, try bakuchiol, a gentler plant-based alternative.
3. Vitamin C
A stable vitamin C serum neutralizes free radicals from sunlight and pollution and visibly brightens over time. Apply it in the morning, beneath sunscreen, for stronger daytime defense.
4. Ceramides
Ceramides are the lipids that hold your skin barrier together. Replenishing them reduces moisture loss, calms sensitivity, and often clears breakouts caused by over-exfoliation.
5. Niacinamide
This multitasking form of vitamin B3 supports ceramide production, balances oil, and softens redness and the look of enlarged pores—and almost every skin type tolerates it well.
Give it time
Most proven actives need eight to twelve weeks to show their full effect. Introduce one new product at a time, stay consistent, and let the science do its work.
